THE FOUNDATIONS · VOICE
Four voices, one vocabulary
The Houses don't use different words. They use the same words from different distances: each speaks of its place in its own way, and all of them speak as houses.
The four registers
- Valverde Lisboa
- Observes: short sentences, the city glimpsedEntra-se da rua e a rua acaba ali.
- Valverde Seteais
- Witnesses: the sentence takes its time, like walking a roomAs paredes têm um metro de espessura e as janelas foram abertas onde havia luz.
- Valverde Santar
- Works: speaks of what is done, and whenO António corta os buxos à mão, duas vezes por ano, e leva onze dias.
- Valverde Collection
- Holds: introduces the three without standing in front of themSão três casas: Lisboa, Sintra e Santar.
Casa, not hotel
In prose they are always casas, a tua casa fora de casa taken literally. The word hotel is admitted only in navigation, where a guest is finding their way and should not have to learn our vocabulary first. Rooms are named for what they have, like Quarto Jardim or Suite Pátio. Never Deluxe or Superior, which is the fastest way to sound like a chain.
The plain sentence
Each chapter carries one factual, present-tense, answerable sentence: A casa tem 43 quartos. It is this voice's anti-urgency device. When everything else is atmosphere, this sentence is verifiable truth, and that is what stops restraint becoming emptiness.
The same room, written twice
Quarto Camélia
Dá para o jardim, e a manhã entra primeiro. São 24 quartos na quinta.

What the voice never says
The calm is auditable: walk any page and count what is not there.
- countdowns and “last rooms left”
- pop-ups and overlay ads
- struck-through prices, discounts, percentages
- badges, stars and ratings
- luxury, exclusive, one of a kind, the best
- exclamation marks
